Big Updates on NoHo Megaprojects, Hearings Upcoming

(l. to r.) Proposed buildings at 375 Lafayette Street, 27 East 4th Street, and 56 Great Jones Street/354 Bowery

Last week three huge projects within one block in NoHo came before the Community Board 2 Landmarks Committee for consideration, with the committee rejecting all of them. Here’s an update on the status of each and next steps:

  • 375 Lafayette Street: a proposed 19-story, more than 195-ft.-tall development on the site of a parking lot at Great Jones Street in the NoHo Historic District Extension. Watch Village Preservation’s testimony opposing the design HERE. This will be heard by the full Community Board Thursday, February 19 beginning at 6:30 pm — info including how to submit written comments and registering to speak HERE. It is tentatively scheduled to be heard at the Landmarks Preservation Commission on March 10 (updates to follow).
  • 27 East 4th Street: a proposed nine-story, 105-ft.-tall building next door to the Merchant’s House Museum within the NoHo Historic District Extension, which the museum says will cause irreparable damage to their structure. Watch Village Preservation’s testimony HERE. This will be heard by the full Community Board Thursday beginning at 6:30 pm — info including how to submit written comments and registering to speak HERE. The date of the Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing for this item has not yet been set (updates to follow).
  • 56 Great Jones Street/354 Bowery: a huge planned 25-story, more than 275-ft.-tall development outside the bounds of any landmarked district, but cantilevering over part of an adjacent building within the NoHo Historic District Extension at 354 Bowery (only the cantilever requires landmarks approval). Watch Village Preservation’s testimony HERE. This will be heard by the full Community Board Thursday beginning at 6:30 pm — info including how to submit written comments and registering to speak HERE. This will be heard by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday, February 24

A strong turnout at the Community Board and Landmarks Preservation Commission hearings will be essential, as supporters of these projects are mobilizing pro-development forces to support the applications.
