The Federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has proposed changes to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which is triggered when state or federal funding, actions, or approval are connected to a project. The new regulations would eliminate public review and commentary on a broad range of projects and the input that members of the public and nonprofits like Village Preservation can have, as well as the public’s ability to even be informed about these projects. Village Preservation has participated in several Section 106 review processes and helped shape outcomes that have resulted in the preservation of historic properties or features. The proposed changes would eliminate or make optional many of these processes. 

It’s critical that elected officials fight back against this plan and insist that Section 106 review remain intact.
