A Public Art Exhibition in Washington Square Park Celebrating Women Visionaries

WE STAND is a public art and history project created by Village Preservation to celebrate remarkable women from Abigail Adams to Edna St. Vincent Millay, Marsha P. Johnson to Patti Smith, Jane Jacobs to Sonia Sotomayor. Women who have lived, worked, and transformed our neighborhoods and our country. Visionaries whose legacies continue to inspire.
Designed for Washington Square Park, WE STAND’s centerpiece is a grand-scale 12-ft.-high structure, to be installed in November 2026 through Women’s History Month in March 2027 Inspired by the hope, enlightenment, and freedom that the park’s arch represents, this “We Follow in Her Footsteps” women’s arch invites visitors to take part in the rich history of these Village trailblazers and carry their stories forward.
