The City’s chosen developer for a roughly 400-ft.-tall “affordable housing” development on city-owned land at 388 Hudson Street (at Clarkson Street) was not only named near the top of the list of the 100 Worst Landlords in NYC by the Public Advocate. Camber Property Group was also the co-owner and sole manager of a building in the Bronx that in 2022 suffered one of the deadliest fires in NYC history, with many of the causes blamed on a lack of heat and defective safety systems about which tenants long complained. And at other low-income/affordable housing projects Camber has built, bought, or managed, there is a disturbing pattern of complaints, violations, and evictions increasing once they take over, and a steady (and sometimes overwhelming) stream of evidence of poor and even dangerous stewardship of their buildings. 

For months, we’ve been asking for answers from city officials about their choice of Camber to develop this project, made in the final days of the Adams administration but continuing onward under the current one. With the application for this development poised to move ahead soon, we’ve compiled a wide-ranging and frankly disturbing compendium of Camber’s track record with other properties, and called on city officials to explain this choice — READ THE LETTER HERE.
