Join Us at 6 pm Tonight: Save Most Holy Redeemer Church

Join Village Preservation, parishioners, and fellow East Village and preservation organizations for a rally tonight, Monday, August 31 at 6 pm in front of the Most Holy Redeemer Church at 173 East 3rd Street (east of Avenue A). The East Village church was closed to parishioners one year ago, and we’ll be rallying to call for the historic church to be preserved and reopened.
The archdiocese has made several moves indicating they intend to permanently shutter the church, likely leading to its sale and demolition. The grand building, which dates to 1851, holds a wealth of history, especially NYC immigrant history, and we have urged the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark the structure to prevent its destruction. The East Village’s rich history remains woefully underprotected and lacking in landmark designations.
