Rally to Save East Village’s Most Holy Redeemer Church Monday, August 31 at 6 pm

Join Village Preservation, parishioners, and fellow East Village and preservation organizations for a rally on Monday, August 31 at 6 pm in front of the Most Holy Redeemer Church at 173 East 3rd Street (east of Avenue A). The church was closed to parishioners one year ago, and we’ll be rallying to call for the historic church to be preserved and reopened.
The archdiocese has made several moves indicating they intend to permanently shut down the church, which would likely lead to its sale and demolition. The building, which dates to 1851, holds a wealth of history, especially NYC immigrant history, and we have urged the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark the structure to prevent its destruction. The East Village’s rich history remains woefully underprotected and lacking in landmark designations.
