Supporting the Call for a Vote on the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA)

The Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA) is a bill in the New York City Council supported by Village Preservation and a broad range of organizations that would give New Yorkers a powerful new tool to stabilize and protect existing affordable housing, and help preserve and protect our older housing stock and the buildings within which they are located. It was passed by the City Council last year and vetoed by former Mayor Adams on his way out the door.
The bill, which now enjoys Mayoral support, could once more come up for a vote in the City Council, offering the legislature another opportunity to pass it into law. Our coalition is asking Speaker Menin to hold a vote on the bill and allow the City Council to strike a blow in the fight for housing affordability and preservation.
