Most Holy Redeemer Church Rally Planned for Saturday Postponed to August 31

Due to anticipated inclement weather, the rally planned for this Saturday at noon to save the East Village’s Most Holy Redeemer Church at 173 East 3rd Street has been postponed, and will instead take place on Monday, August 31 at 6 pm, which is the one-year anniversary of the closure of the church.

The archdiocese has closed Most Holy Redeemer to parishioners for over 10 months, and made several moves indicating they intend to permanently shut down the church. This would likely lead to its sale and demolition. The building, which dates to 1851, holds a wealth of history, especially NYC immigrant history, and we have urged the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark the structure to prevent its destruction. The East Village’s rich history remains woefully underprotected and lacking in landmark designations.
