Plans for Additions Atop Iconic Meatpacking District Buildings Scaled Back, Still Alive

(top l. and middle) The original rejected proposed addition to 675 Hudson; (lower l.) the revised approved proposal, pending further refinements to reduce visibility; (r.) the latest proposed addition to 69 Gansevoort Street.

There have been several recent proposals for dramatic changes to iconic buildings in the Meatpacking District. Thanks to the landmark designation we secured for the area in 2003, none of these proposals can move ahead without public review and approval of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC).

After big pushback from Village Preservation and others, the LPC did not approve a proposed spaceshiplike addition to the “Triangle Building” at 675 Hudson Street. The developer came back this Tuesday with a scaled-back proposal that is much less visible and conforms more closely to the shape of the building. The LPC approved the revised plan with the caveat that they work to reduce the visibility of the addition even further.

At 69 Gansevoort Street, the LPC also rejected a plan for an oversized addition to this iconic Meatpacking District building that Village Preservation vigorously opposed. Now the developer is returning to the LPC with a revised plan that changes but barely reduces the visibility or impact of the oversized proposed addition. We are urging the Commission to reject this plan as well.
