Join Village Preservation for a fun and spooky adventure for young people and their families, the Great Village History Haunt! Beginning at the historic Marble Cemetery, this Halloween-themed neighborhood adventure will invite participants to explore the East Village’s remarkable history, uncover hidden details, and discover fascinating stories, including some with a spooky twist. Combining the fun of a history hunt with the spirit of the Halloween season, the event promises an afternoon of discovery, surprises, and neighborhood exploration for all ages.

The East Village is one of New York City’s most distinctive neighborhoods, with layers of history reflected in its architecture, streets, institutions, gardens, and cultural landmarks. The Great Village History Haunt offers an engaging way to explore these stories firsthand, encouraging participants to look closely, ask questions, and discover details they might otherwise walk right past.

Designed to appeal to children (7-16) and their adults , the event combines the excitement of a hunt with spooky fun of Haloween, while discovering the pleasures of exploring one of New York City’s most historically rich neighborhoods. Whether you are a young detective, a family looking for a unique afternoon activity, or a longtime East Village resident, the Great Village History Haunt offers a new perspective on the neighborhood. Discover some of its more mysterious and eerie corners.

The event begins at Marble Cemetery, a remarkable historic site that offers a glimpse into New York’s past. From there, participants will embark on an exploration of five historic (and spooky) sites in the East Village.

“Village Preservation believes that understanding our neighborhoods’ history is one of the best ways to appreciate what makes them unique and worth protecting,” said Andrew Berman, Executive Director of Village Preservation. “The Great Village History Haunt invites young people and their families to experience that history in a fun, engaging, and memorable way.”
